Diploma 2016 -" I’M_MIGRANT" by Luca Negrini

INTERPRETING THE MATTER OF CONSTANT TRANSITION FOR THE DIFFERENT ACTORS INHABITING LAMPEDUSA (ITALY) AND GATHERING THEIR COMMON NEEDS TOGETHER WITH WHAT THE ISLAND IS LACKING.

Lampedusa is a door.

People arrive on the Island, stay for a short period of time and then leave: this constant flow makes the Island of

Lampedusa a transitional place.

The phase of the research made me dive into the main three (very) different groups of people inhabiting the Island: locals, new comers and tourists.

The goal of my reasearch was to find similarities among their needs during their stay in Lampedusa and to create a space where a natural and positive exchange could take place.

Space is one of the keywords to my project, which wants to allow varied opportunities of privacy, intimacy and shared activities.

In fact, the small dimension of the Island (20 square kilometers) creates a very unique environment where nature, new comers seeking freedom and safety, tourists and locals meet.

The project aims to fill up what the Island and its people are lacking and, at the same time, have a symbolic value as a landmark and  a memory of what Lampedusa has been going through in the last years.

My reaction to the reality of this small Mediterranean Island, full of contradictions and potential, is a “bridge building” which wants to connect the main town street to the sea and be a clear response to the actual stillness of the government and local authorities in front of the current situation.
