The term ''sustainable development', despite its omnipresence today, is a relatively young notion. First properly defined at the beginning of the eighties, it made possible for 'environmentalism' to leave behind its counter-cultural roots and infiltrate main stream discourses. On the basis of the exhibition 'Behind the Green Door', curated by Rotor for the occasion of the 2014 Oslo Architecture Triennale, Maarten Gielen will present a series of observations on how 'sustainability' as a concept operates in contemporary (european) society. BAS was awarded with The Diploma Supplement (DS) Label during the Internationalization Conference in Trondheim on 5. March 2014. This label is awarded to Higher Education Institutions which deliver a Diploma Supplement to all graduates in accordance with the model developed by the European Commission, Council of Europe and UNESCO. BAS also had to provide evidence of best practice in the public information relating to the Diploma Supplement on our website, and to present examples of actual Diploma Supplements that have been issued to our graduates. The Ministry of Education and Research in Norway has encouraged all institutions of Higher Education to aim for this recognition, and BAS is proud to be on of 5 new institutions that were awarded with this label in 2014.

Going beyond 'target hardening' or 'Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design', this lecture explores the intersection of politics and space from a materialist, humanist engagement with principles of direct democracy in an age of neoliberalism. This lecture is very suitable for the 3rd class and the master and diploma students
