Bjørnar Skaar Haveland will hold a presentation on his experience living in Shatila refugee camp in Lebanon for a year in 2015-16 for a research project on urbanisation architectural identity in protracted refugee camps. Shatila is a Palestinian refugee camp that was opened in 1949 on the outskirts of Beirut, that after almost seventy years houses 30,000 refugees (many 4th generation refugees) and is completely surrounded by the city sprawl. We will talk about the architectural response to a permanent temporality imposed on the Palestinian population, the increased commercialization of the camp and how it interacts and influences the city surrounding it. He wants to share thoughts on methods to map and investigate people's perception of their built environment that can be relevant for some of the mastercourses this fall and have a discussion on architects' role in dealing with underserved populations.
